President Obama’s Message to the Nigerian People

Hello. Today, I want to speak directly to you—the people of Nigeria.

Nigeria is a great nation and you can be proud of the progress you’ve made. Together, you won your independence, emerged from military rule, and strengthened democratic institutions. You’ve strived to overcome division and to turn Nigeria’s diversity into a source of strength. You’ve worked hard to improve the lives of your families and to build the largest economy in Africa.

Now you have a historic opportunity to help write the next chapter of Nigeria’s progress—by voting in the upcoming elections. For elections to be credible, they must be free, fair and peaceful. All Nigerians must be able to cast their votes without intimidation or fear.

So I call on all leaders and candidates to make it clear to their supporters that violence has no place in democratic elections—and that they will not incite, support or engage in any kind of violence—before, during, or after the votes are counted. I call on all Nigerians to peacefully express your views and to reject the voices of those who call for violence. And when elections are free and fair, it is the responsibility of all citizens to help keep the peace, no matter who wins.

Successful elections and democratic progress will help Nigeria meet the urgent challenges you face today. Boko Haram—a brutal terrorist group that kills innocent men, women and children—must be stopped. Hundreds of kidnapped children deserve to be returned to their families. Nigerians who have been forced to flee deserve to return to their homes. Boko Haram wants to destroy Nigeria and all that you have worked to build. By casting your ballot, you can help secure your nation’s progress.

I’m told that there is a saying in your country: “to keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done.” Today, I urge all Nigerians—from all religions, all ethnic groups, and all regions—to come together and keep Nigeria one. And in this task of advancing the security, prosperity, and human rights of all Nigerians, you will continue to have a friend and partner in the United States of America.

Pope Francis Credited With Performing 'Miracle' As St. Gennaro's Blood Liquifies

Pope Francis is being credited with a miracle -- or at least a "half miracle" -- after St. Gennaro's blood liquified in his presence in Naples on Saturday.
The saint's blood is usually dry inside of its sealed glass ampoule. However, after the pope kissed the relic, it began to turn to liquid.
It is the sign that St. Gennaro loves Pope Francis: half of the blood turned to liquid," Cardinal Crescenzo Sepe, archbishop of Naples, told the cheering crowd, according to Vatican Insider.
“If only half of it liquefied that means we still have work to do; we have to do better," the pontiff replied. "We have only half of the saint’s love.”
The website reports that the blood continued to liquefy until the entire contents of the ampoule had turned to liquid, causing some in the crowd to weep.
St. Gennaro, also known as St. Januarius, was the bishop of Naples until he was martyred in 305 during persecution under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, Aleteia reports. In those days, it was common for Christians to collect the blood of their martyrs and keep it in the catacombs with the corpse of the deceased. The presence of the blood is an indication that the person had died a martyr, the website said.
The faithful believe St. Gennaro's blood liquifies three times a year if they pray enough: on the saint's feast day of Sept. 19, on the Saturday before the first Sunday of May and on December 16, the National Catholic Register reported.
The liquefaction of the blood has been documented for at least six centuries, AFP reported, happening up to 18 times a year in some cases.
Saturday marked the first time the blood has liquified in the papal presence since 1848, when it did so in front of Pope Pius IX, according to the Catholic Herald. The blood didn't liquify in front of Pope John Paul II when he visited in 1979, nor did it do so when Benedict XVI visited in 2007, according to the website.
Skeptics believe there is another explanation for the phenomenon. One possibility is that the blood liquifies when there are certain changes in conditions, such as when the relic is moved from storage to display.
While in Naples, Pope Francis also railed against organized crime and shared a meal with prison inmates, including some who have AIDS and some who are transgender.

Drug Trafficking : 29-yr-old Nigerian sentenced to death in Malaysia

A Nigerian man resident in Malaysia has been sentenced to death for drug trafficking.

29-year-old Luke Nnaemeka Ugwu was, on Friday, March 20, found guilty of trafficking 725.4 gm of methamphetamine and sentenced to die by hanging.
Ugwu was said to have committed the offence at arrival hall of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on May 15, 2012.

In delivering the judgment, Justice Datuk Abdul Alim Abdullah found his defence to be a mere denial and not sufficient to prove his innocence.

Two other Nigerians escaped death in the same court when one 31-year-old Onyeme Chibunna Okechukwu pleaded guilty to drug possession while another, 29-year-old Obdiegwu Chinwuba Sigismund was acquitted of all charges.

Founding Father Of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew Dies

Lee Kuan Yew, the statesman who transformed Singapore from a small port city into a wealthy global hub, has died at the age of 91.

The city-state's prime minister for 31 years, he was widely respected as the architect of Singapore's prosperity.

But he was criticised for his iron grip on power. Under him freedom of speech was tightly restricted and political opponents were targeted by the courts.

A state funeral will be held on 29 March, after a week of mourning.

In an emotional televised address, his son Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong paid tribute to him.

"He fought for our independence, built a nation where there was none, and made us proud to be Singaporeans. We won't see another man like him."

Mr Lee oversaw Singapore's independence from Britain and separation from Malaysia. His death was announced early on Monday. He had been in hospital for several weeks with pneumonia and was on life support.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he was "deeply saddened" by Mr Lee's death. US President Barack Obama described him as a "giant of history". The Chinese foreign ministry called him "a uniquely influential statesman in Asia".

'Lifetime of building'

In Singapore, a steady stream of people arrived at the hospital and the Istana, the prime minister's office, to offer their condolences.

A charismatic figure, Mr Lee co-founded the People's Action Party (PAP), which has governed Singapore since 1959, and was its first prime minister.

The Cambridge-educated lawyer led Singapore through merger with, and then separation from, Malaysia.

Speaking after the split in 1965, he pledged to build a meritocratic, multi-racial nation. But tiny Singapore - with no natural resources - needed a new economic model.

"We knew that if we were just like our neighbours, we would die," Mr Lee told the New York Times in 2007.

"We had to produce something which is different and better than what they have."

As the long wait for the inevitable continued, the floral tributes piled up right outside the city-state's main hospital, often laid by tearful, older Singaporeans who truly see this sharp-tongued, tough-minded man as a father figure.

And while there were many affectionate comments from well-wishers, there was still some fear of this extraordinary leader, who has dominated Singapore for the whole of its independent existence, and once threatened to rise from the grave if he saw things happening that he did not like.

For all of its impressive successes, this is still a country with Lee Kuan Yew's imprint visible everywhere. He was unapologetic about the repressive measures he used to impose order, and unapologetic about believing his prescriptions alone were the right ones. No-one is quite sure what direction Singapore will now take without him.

FOOTBALL - Nigeria’s Flying Eagles emerge African champions

The Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, have been crowned champions of the 19th Africa Youth Championships as they defeated hosts, Senegal, by a lone goal in a thrilling final match on Sunday night at the 45,000-capacity Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium.

A stunning goal from Bernard Bulbwa in the first half was all that was required for Nigeria to lift her 7th AYC trophy. Nigeria and Senegal had faced each other two weeks ago in the group opener of the competition AYC with the Flying Eagles emerging as 3-1 winners.

Going into Sunday’s game, the Flying Eagles had vowed to complete a double but the Senegalese who were making the final for the first time promised to turn the tables against Coach Manu Garba and his boys in the final match.

The Senegal team did try to turn things around as they enjoyed the earlier attacking foray in Sunday’s final match with the likes of Ndiaye and El Hadji Niang both attempting to get the ball past Flying Eagles goalkeeper, Joshua Enaholo, who was in good form.

Despite Senegal’s initial initiatives, it was the Flying Eagles that took the lead in the 19th minute when Bernard Bulbwa justified his late inclusion in the starting line-up with a wonderful goal that is in contention for goal of the tournament.

From then on the two teams tried with no success to get another goal.

Before this latest triumph in Senegal, the Flying Eagles’ previous AYC title were in 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005 and 2011.

Earlier in the day, Ghana won the third place game defeating Mali 3-1. The four teams that reached the semi-final – Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, and Mali- will represent Africa at the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Boko Haram In Ghana

Managing editor of the Insight Newspaper, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr has downplayed nervousness caused by some security experts that billboards mounted at vantage points in Accra by some Nigeria’s leading political parties ahead of the country’s presidential elections pose a Boko Haram insurgent in Ghana.
Several billboards of Nigerian political contenders including President Goodluck Jonathan and opposition leader, Muhammadu Buhari have been splashed at various points in Accra only to attract the attention of Nigeria residents living in Ghana.

Some political pundits and security experts fears and believe the erection of these billboards of political parties in Nigeria could call the attention of the terrorist group in Ghana.

Mr. Pratt speaking on Peace FM, said those fears are misplaced and over-exaggerated due to the cordial relationship between the two countries.

According to him, “It’s not the billboards that will attract the Boko Haram guys...If we say the billboards are too many and we want to complain about that, no problem. But we should not say the billboards shouldn’t be erected at all.

“When you go to Lagos, you see Ghanaian companies doing businesses in Nigeria erecting billboards in their town. So if Ghanaian products can have billboards in their country, why can’t they also have theirs here? Of course this is a political product but still” he added.
